About Northwood

A Canadian brokerage founded in 2004, with a head office in Toronto and offices in Vancouver, Calgary and Montréal.

We started because nobody was explaining the system.

In 2004 a client who had moved from Winnipeg walked into a Toronto office with her Autopac policy and the assumption that an address change would do it. There was nothing to change: what she had in Manitoba does not exist in Ontario. Nobody had told her.

We built Northwood around that conversation. Every file starts with the same question, and the answer decides everything after it. Twenty-two years later we place business in all thirteen provinces and territories, and we still start the same way.

A broker who does not tell you what your province already covers is selling you something, not advising you.

Four house rules.

Province first

We never talk about price before we know where you live. In Canada half the answer is already written into provincial statute.

The endorsements page

It is the second page that matters. We read it before quoting anything, including on the policy you already hold.

A named broker

Not a call centre. The person who placed your policy is the person you ring on the day of a claim.

Disclosed compensation

By commission from the insurer, in writing before you buy, and identical no matter which insurer wins the case.

The people

Who answers when you call.

Élise Tremblay-Roy

Principal broker, Québec · Montréal

Fifteen years placing personal lines in a province that runs half its auto system publicly. Élise is the person we send anyone who has just moved to Québec and cannot work out what happened to their liability limit.

Licensed by the AMF

Aoife Brennan

Head of personal lines · Toronto

Aoife rebuilt the way we read an existing policy before quoting against it, which is why our first call so often starts with a page nobody has looked at since the policy was issued.

RIBO licensed

Ravinder Sandhu

Commercial broker, Prairies · Calgary

Trades, transport and light manufacturing across Alberta and Saskatchewan. Ravi has spent enough time in shops and yards to ask the question that the application form does not.

Alberta Insurance Council licensed

Colin Ferreira

Travel and life specialist · Vancouver

Colin reads stability clauses out loud to clients before they buy, which sounds tedious and has quietly prevented a lot of declined claims.

Insurance Council of BC licensed

Marguerite Cardinal

Claims advocate · Toronto

Marguerite works for you against the adjuster’s file, not the other way round. Twelve years of Ontario property claims, and a filing system that has settled arguments.

RIBO licensed

Gideon Sorensen

Autopac and Prairie personal lines · Winnipeg

Gideon spends his days on the layer above Basic Autopac, which is the part of a Manitoba policy that most people have never had explained to them.

Insurance Council of Manitoba licensed

Tell us your province. The rest follows.

A ten minute request, a named broker, and an answer that starts with what your province already covers.
